Sports and Exercise Medicine Students’ Association (SEMSA) is thrilled to announce their inaugural National Student Conference: “SEM17”! 

We will present all that is new and exciting in Sports and Exercise Medicine with some amazing speakers, practical sessions and panel discussions lined up. It will be a full jam-packed day of professional development to further your knowledge and skills, with sessions tailored to medicine, physiotherapy and general allied health. 

This will also be a fantastic chance for networking, with a social night held afterwards with drink specials and canapes included in the ticket price.

Women in Sport: Changing the Game

Following in the success of our events in 2017, the SEMSA team are excited to announce the highly anticipated VIC event: “Women in Sport: Changing the Game”!

This event will feature some of the world leaders and experts in sports, turning the spotlight to women as they revolutionize the sports landscape of today and for the future. 

This includes our inspirational and charismatic keynote speaker, Maddy Hogan, who is an elite Australian Paralympic athlete who won Bronze for Australia in the Women’s F46 and F47 Javelin events at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and the 2012 London Paralympics. Maddy has had two ACL knee reco’s, one of which occurred 9 months prior to the 2016 Rio Paralympics AND you guessed it – she was still able to participate, coming in at an astounding 5th place.

Also speaking is physiotherapist, Jane Rooney who is a specialist sports physiotherapist (FACP) and is one of Australia’s most recognised and respected knee specialists. Jane has extensive experience in the Sports Medicine field both in Europe and Australia and is an Honorary Lecturer at Melbourne University and works with elite athletes at state, national and international levels.

Joining the line up is Sports Registrar Laura Lallenec, who is an AFL Academy Doctor and holds titles of the Chief Doctor for the Melbourne Football Club Women’s AFL Team and Casey VFL Team, Medical Officer at the Melbourne Storm NRL Team and previously Chief Doctor at Williamstown VFL Team in 2015 and 2016. 

The event will also include a guest panel of incredible speakers including Bridget Barker, who was named AFL’s 2015 Woman of the Year and has many years’ experience in Women’s AFL coaching and is the Sports and Recreation Coordinator at the Huddle, North Melbourne Football Club.

SEMSA would like to present its next event in NSW: a two-part workshop in MSK examination skills.

It will be a great opportunity for all students preparing for their exams to brush up on their examination skills, and graduates to revise their knowledge and learn a few things from the experts in the field. 

Part one: Lower Limb 
– Hip, Knee, Ankle/Foot 

We will be hosting the best and brightest in the field to share their clinical insight including: 

– Dr. John Best, MBBS, FACSP FFSEM: who is a specialist SEM Physician with the Orthosports Group in Sydney and acts as a Supervisor and an Examiner for the ACSEP. He has a key clinical interest in hip disorders and management and has had extensive experience in rugby medicine, serving as the Wallabies’ team physician and consulting with Rugby Australia. 

– Dr. Carolyn Broderick, MBBS FACSP PhD: who is a specialist in sport and exercise medicine at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Senior Lecturer with the faculty of Medicine, UNSW. She has had extensive experience in elite sports, holding the position of deputy medical director for the Australian Olympic Team for Rio 2016 and working as team physician for the Australian Olympic Team for the Sydney 2000 and London 2012 games. She has a particular interest in knee injuries and management.

Following in the success of our events in 2017, the SEMSA team are excited to announce the next VIC event: “Shoulder Instability: Diagnosis, Management and Return to Sport”.

This event will feature some of the world leaders and experts in shoulder injury and management, with a particular emphasis on shoulder instability in sport. We have secured the best and brightest in the field, talking all things along the shoulder injury and management continuum: from diagnosis, imaging, 

decision-making, surgery and return to sport.

This includes our keynote speaker, Mr. Greg Hoy, who is a senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery Monash University and works as a Hand and Upper Limb Surgeon. Greg is an expert in shoulder surgery and has stayed at the forefront of technology with development in all aspects of upper limb surgery. He works closely with sporting teams and organisations, including the AFL, AIS, VIS, NRL, Athletics Australia and is an associate member of the AFL Medical Officers Association. 

Also speaking is physiotherapist, Dr. Tania Pizzari who is an expert in shoulder rehabilitation and management. She is an esteemed member of the Shoulder and Elbow Physiotherapists of Australasia and lecturer and researcher with the La Trobe University Department of Physiotherapy. 




SEMSA is excited to announce its inaugural NSW Event: “Careers in Sports and Exercise Medicine”. Come and be inspired by Australia’s leading experts in the sports and exercise medicine field, including our keynote speaker, Dr. Tom Cross, Head Doctor for the Sydney Swans Football Club.

After a massive turnout to our first event of 2017, the SEMSA team is excited to announce its next event of the year: Tendinopathy – Principles of Diagnosis and Management

The event will feature some of the world leaders in tendon research and rehabilitation from La Trobe University. Professor Jill Cook is world-renowned for her work in the field, being an editor for BJSM and having worked as an olympic physiotherapist, published countless papers on tendinopathy and supervised numerous PhD students. Two of her previous students, Dr Ebonie Rio and Dr Sean Docking are also gaining substantial recognition in the tendinopathy world, for their work on tendon rehabilitation and novel imaging techniques respectively.
The event will be run in two stages: first will be a presentation on the diagnosis and management principles of tendinopathy; followed by a practical demonstration of key concepts in examining patients and treating their symptoms. 



We’re excited to announce SEMSA’s first event of 2017! ‘ACL – A Crucial Injury’, will feature Daniel Menzel of the Geelong Cats, possibly Australian sport’s hardest luck story of recent years, and will explore the rehabilitation journey from ACL injury to return to sport.

Adam Castricum, current Hawthorn Football Club Doctor and President of ACSEP, will take you through acute ACL injury diagnosis and management. Our Keynote speaker Daniel Menzel has suffered not one, but 4 ACL injuries, and will share first hand experience of an elite athlete’s injury and recovery. The conservative management of ACL injuries will be discussed by APA titled Sports Physiotherapist Shane O’Sullivan, who is currently a physiotherapist for the Western Bulldogs, while all things surgical will be covered by a prominent orthopod. This event is sure to be a sell out so get in quick!

It’s time for SEMSA’s AGM for 2016! The AGM will be held on the 29th of October at the Terminus Hotel in North Fitzroy. We will hold the AGM first at 4.30pm sharp in the function room then stay for some dinner and drinks at the venue. This event will be for MEMBERS ONLY (sign up at

Workshop: Concussion In Sport

We are proud to announce our first workshop, ‘GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME!’, on the topic of Concussion in Sport.

The night will be facilitated by Dr Michael Makdissi, ACSEP Sport and Exercise Physician, current club doctor at Hawthorn Football Club, and researcher at The Florey Institute for Neuroscience and Mental Health. Michael has a special interest in concussion and has conducted substantial research in the area, with numerous publications and involvement in multiple international consensus statements on concussion in sport.

Dr Liam West will also be assisting on the night, and will conduct a session including current return to sport guidelines and SCAT3 testing protocol. Liam is an RMO at Royal Melbourne Hospital, and was the founder of USEMS, the UK-based organisation for students interested in SEM!
